For those interested in taking their Mandarin a little further, we've put together a selection of videos found around the web that explain some of the basics of China's main language.
Videos featured include lessons on how to pronounce Beijing correctly, learning the pinyin alphabet (the romanised version of Chinese words) and a series of lessons from Chinese language learners' website activechinese.com.
Good luck!
How to pronounce Beijing
Although this may sound simple, many non-Chinese fail to correctly pronounce the capital city of the world's most populous nation.
In this video from twochinesecharacters.com, viewers are taught how to properly pronounce Beijing, and the meaning of its name (Northern capital).
Pronouncing pinyin
Pinyin is perhaps the most accesible way to read Chinese languages for non-speakers of East Asian languages. Based on the roman alphabet, Chinese syllables and characters are converted into roman characters, though with some pronuciation differences to European languages, as evidenced by the following video.
